SIGNS
/ SYMPTOMS OF HEARING LOSS
Hearing
is a precious gift and we often take
for granted the sounds that enrich
our lives. Our ability to hear these
sounds: the whispered words of a toddler,
singer of birds, rustling of leaves,
music of a symphony orchestra.
Better
understanding of hearing loss begins
by understanding how we hear.
Sounds
waves are collected by the outer ear
and channeled along the ear canal
to the eardrum. When the sound waves
reach the eardrum, the impact creates
vibrations, which are transferred
the three tiny bones of the middle
ear. Sound is then amplified and sent
to the cochlea (our hearing organ).
SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF HEARING LOSS
If you exhibit one or more of these
traits, you may have a hearing loss:
-
Turning up the TV to a volume
that disturbs others.
-
Constantly asking people
to repeat themselves or to speak louder.
-
Difficulty understanding
conversational speech when background
noise is present.
-
Depending on visual cues
(lip reading) to understand what is
being said.
-
You hear better in one ear
than in the other.
-
Avoiding social situations
where noise can make it more difficult
to hear.
-
You depend on watching people's
faces to understand what is said.
